Assignment 5: Writing a Bad-News Letter
For this assignment, you are to plan, draft, and revise a bad-news letter based on one of the scenarios below. Plan and write the letter using the five-step pattern you have studied in this module. Remember to place the bad news near the beginning, just as with any other main message; it is the second step of the five-step pattern. Follow the writing process suggested throughout the course to plan the document.
For this assignment, choose only one of the following scenario packages, each of which contains all the documents you need to complete the assignment:
- Optional Scenario #1 — Unsuccessful Candidates
- Optional Scenario #2 — A Difficult Vendor
- Optional Scenario #3 — Discontinued Support for Local School
- Optional Scenario #4 – Your Own Scenario
Each scenario package asks you to do the following four steps:
- Complete a Reader Dialogue Worksheet to plan the letter you will write. (A worksheet is included with each scenario.)
- Draft your letter, paying attention to structure, reader focus, mechanics, tone, and style. Be sure to use the proper format for a letter.
- Use the Document Review Sheet to help you evaluate your writing. (A worksheet is included with each scenario.)
- Revise your letter based upon your review in the Document Review Sheet.
When you have completed your scenario package, upload it in Moodle for Assignment 5. This is your final assignment.
