Assignment 4: Evaluate Your Writing

This module incorporates the concepts in Modules 2 (structure and reader focus) and 3 (mechanics) and adds two more dimensions of writing: style and tone. It also introduces the Document Review Sheet as a tool for evaluating the structure, reader focus, mechanics, style, and tone of a document.

For this assignment, you are to evaluate and revise two documents: the Ruritania Disaster Risk Management E-mail and an e-mail or letter of your own:

The Ruritania e-mail

For the first part of the assignment, you are evaluating and revising the Ruritania Disaster Risk Management E-mail. Its structure, reader focus, and mechanics are correct, so you do not need to revise these aspects. Focus instead on finding and correcting problems with style and tone. Please refer to the Ruritania e-mail for further instructions.

Your own e-mail or letter – "Evaluate My Writing"

For the second part of the assignment, you are evaluating and revising your own e-mail or letter, using the Evaluate My Writing document. Choose a work e-mail or letter that you have previously written (do not use the same e-mail that you submitted as your assignment in Module 2). Copy this e-mail or letter as a Word document into the Evaluate My Writing document.

Use the Document Review Sheet in the document to evaluate the structure, reader focus, mechanics, style, and tone of your own e-mail or letter. Indicate in the review sheet how you could improve the element. Then rewrite the e-mail or letter as a new, improved document.

Upload the following two Word files in Moodle for this assignment:

  • A revised Ruritania e-mail, with style and tone problems identified and corrected
  • A completed Evaluate My Writing document, that contains:

• Your original e-mail or letter

• A completed Document Review Sheet identifying problem areas in your original document

• The revised e-mail or letter, with problems corrected

Your tutor will provide feedback on the overall effectiveness of your revisions to both documents. You may be asked to revise and resubmit any part of the assignment based on this feedback.
