Step 1: Determine your purpose statement and fill in the table for the writing sample you submitted when you registered for this course, or for another report you have recently written.

The purpose is appropriate for the type of document.


Do you need to state the purpose explicitly in the text? (Sometimes it is clear from the type of document and other information.)


If the purpose is stated, it follows the “to + verb + object” style.


If the purpose is unstated, it is nonetheless clear and could be summarized as “to + verb + object.”
